The Road to the Cross, Part One
By Colleen Witter Nieman
We have now entered the Lent season, leading up to Easter. There are some churches that encourage their congregation to give up something in the 40 days before Easter such as chocolate, reducing their time on the Internet. Some set a goal to spend more time with the Lord and their family. Others choose to give up caffeine or TV. Some churches want you to fast. The point is: take the time to focus on the Lord and what he wants for your Life. If you do choose to give up a cherished habit, for the Lent period remember, this is between you and the Lord. Matthew 6:17 (NIV) says “But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you”.
Some of you may need to give up some friends who may be a negative influence for you. Others may need to change habits or let go of addictions, and others may need to change careers, even if its your most favorite career. How would you react if the Lord asked you to give up this lucrative career, and follow HIM? Are you willing to give up friends, habits or career for that closer relationship with God?
You may be praying about it, but the more you pray the more enticing it becomes to keep things the way they are (or get promotion in your career). It might go on back and forth a few times, until you finally ask for a word of confirmation from the Lord. A friend of mine went through this and picked up his Bible opened it up and put his finger on a verse, hoping it would say to stay with the current job … Instead it was Matthew 27:5 “Judas went out and hung himself”.
During this time, Ask the Lord what areas of your life need to change, seek those who need a touch of Jesus, knock on the door of opportunities that the Lord gives you.
