Dating, Trusting God, and using Christian Mingle

By Alaina Fugo

Proverbs 3: 5 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not onto your own understanding.” This passage evokes different emotions for people. The idea is that God knows what He is doing in His own way and time. For Gayle, this taught her patience and trust, that God would bring the right man in her life at the right time.

Gayle had been using Christian Mingle for nearly four years. She talked with six different men that she had met online. About half of them gave her signs that they were not Christians, or seemed that they were faking their faith to try and find someone through the website. One man made it clear he didn’t want to get married, and another was relocating from her area of Philadelphia.

Their first official date lasted four hours in a restaurant, and it was just talking. After their time together, Gayle stated, “That is the man I am going to marry.”

When she started talking to Larry, there was just something completely different. Even though he lived the farthest away out of all the men she encountered online; she spoke with him the most frequently. They would talk every night for at least an hour.

After two months of talking on the phone, they finally agreed to meet up in person in January of 2008. Gayle has said that there was an instant physical attraction to him. He was 100% her match. He was a Christian, gentleman (he even sat separately from her) and his sense of humor is what drew him to her. Their first official date lasted four hours in a restaurant, and it was just talking. After their time together, Gayle stated, “That is the man I am going to marry.”

Gayle had been married before but was single for five years. Larry had been single for 15 years before he met Gayle. Both had been married and divorced prior to meeting. Gayle’s daughter, Katie, had to approve of Larry before any marriage could happen, according to Gayle. It is beautiful to know that Katie and Larry are so close that she calls Larry “Dad” more than her biological father now.

They married in October of 2008, on Lake Seneca in upstate New York. (I had the absolute pleasure of being in attendance at the ceremony). Katie was the maid of honor and more than happy to know that God had put Gayle and Larry together. They are still married; they have their challenges, but what marriage doesn’t?

She has also said that “Christian Mingle was better than meeting people in bars,” and she and Larry would never have had the opportunity to meet, if she had not used the website. She has two other friends that have used Christian Mingle; both have been married using the website. Gayle has commented that when you are single to “take your time and enjoy the ride.” When God is ready to provide the right man or woman for you, He will.
