Divine Inspiration and the Bible Attribute to Founding of Berry College in 1902

Berry College is one of the top liberal arts colleges in the United States of America, according to the Berry College website statistics.

American educator, Martha Berry founded Berry College. It has grown into the world’s largest contagious college campus in the world since its founding in 1902, according to the Berry College website statistics.

From starting informal teaching sessions in the 1890s to founding a boy’s school in 1902 and a girl’s school in 1909, Berry College slowly grew into the largest contagious college campus in the world. It became a junior college in 1926 and a 4-year college in 1930.

Berry was inspired by teachings from the Bible and meetings she had with people, who lacked some basic education, to form Berry College.

“Martha Berry was the driving force behind it,” Associate professor of history and Dept. chair of history, Matthew Stanard told Atlanta Christian Voice. “She encountered people familiar with the Bible and realized they lacked some basic education. She started informal teaching sessions, opened up a school for boys in 1902 and opened up a school for girls in 1909.The way [Berry College] came about was because of Martha Berry.”

“Martha Berry was the driving force behind it,” Associate professor of history and Dept. chair of history, Matthew Stanard told Atlanta Christian Voice.

Between the 2017 through 2018 academic school year, 1,978 undergraduates and 132 graduates from 37 states and nine foreign countries attended Berry College, according to the Berry College website statistics. It has 47 primary buildings on campus, 15 classroom facilities and 10 residence halls, according to additional statistics from the Berry College website.

Berry College is a liberal arts college with a non-denominational Christian background and values. It embraced the label of a liberal arts college between the 1930s and 1940s and is located in the heart of Rome, Ga.

Berry College was 100 acres of land when it was founded in 1902. During the Great Depression era, Berry began to acquire more land than the land that she originally had to add onto the Berry College campus. This included nature trails, lakes, forests and fields that comprise its 27,000 acres of land that it is today.

“She continued to acquire land beyond what her students worked,” Stanard told Atlanta Christian Voice. “Out of this foundation [of 100 acres of land] she acquired land and made it a part of the campus for [Berry College]. The campus is so huge and the buildings are very large.”

Stanard appreciates the values of Berry College.

“The Christian Values go back to Martha Berry because she founded it on Christian principles,” Stanard told Atlanta Christian Voice.

Stanard also enjoys the beauty of the nature of Berry College and its campus life.

“It’s a beautiful place to live and work,” Standard told Atlanta Christian Voice.” The class size is small. We have a great thing going on and the course relationships are wonderful. It’s a great place to be able to teach and explore different ideas
