LIVING IN THE TRUTH
By Kurt J. Kolka

(EDITOR’S NOTE: This is Part Seven in a series about my long struggle with depression and how I was shown the way out.)

I’ve been talking about a few of the lies I believed throughout most of my adult life. These lies held me back in life. However that changed when I learned the truth.

I had to realize if I said I was a Christian, that meant I was trusting God. Trusting God meant trusting His Word – the Bible. So, If someone told me something contrary to to what the Bible said, I needed to trust that the Bible is correct and they are wrong.

For instance, if someone told me I was worthless, but the Bible said I was “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14) and God’s “workmanship [His own masterwork, a work of art]” (Ephesians 2:10 AMP), then I must choose to believe God. No one knows me better than Him. No bully. No family member. No coworker. No other human being.

Understanding that truth meant telling myself the idea “I am worthless” is a lie. It then meant telling myself the truth, “God created me as I am and I have value.” It meant marking those places in the Bible which proved that to be true.

Likewise, the idea “I control my life and if I fail, it proves I am a failure” is also a lie. If I have given my life over to Jesus Christ, then He is in control and guiding my life into what His plan is for me. And even those who choose not to trust Christ are not really in charge either. It is a deception. We only control small parts of our lives and if something great happens, it is only because God allowed for it to. (More on this in another column.) As Proverbs 19:21 says “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

The third lie I mentioned is “I could mess up my life so badly, God could not repair it (or would leave me).” Again, this goes back to the first lie and we have already proven that to be false. Besides this, however, the Bible says in Romans 8:28, “And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.”

Being able to win over these lies is based upon our faith. Faith equals trust. So, if a person puts their faith in Jesus Christ, they are putting their trust in Him. They are trusting Him, not what others say and not how they feel.

Again, to overcome the lies we believe in this world, we need to understand God’s truth:

1. God created me as I am; I am not a failure.
2. I need to surrender control to God in all things.
3. Don’t worry about mistakes, because God is guiding my life.

Those are three truths which have guided me to a new life. They are not all I need to know, but they are a step in the right direction.

In upcoming weeks we will look at exactly what faith is, how we place our faith in Christ and how we stand before God.

As always, there is more to come.
